Today the Arena Heavy is doing his first international interview. We are so much proud with this privilege to interview this man so influential. The Argentinean bass player, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Beto Vazquez that since the year 2000 presents us with your project called "Infinity", among others.
Thank you Beto!!
I would like to talk a little about your training, influences. The origin of Beto Vazquez Infinity .
I started playing bass as a self-taught musician, and after forming Beto Vazquez Infinity as a band that reflects the mixture of many musical styles. I was studying music at the Florida school and study composition and keyboard harmony. This is where I began to really grow as a musician. Currently I am devoted to composition. And I'm studying guitar with a teacher. Thus, I interpret or play, under keyboard and guitars. My influences are from many years now but I keep adding new influences my ABC can say it is. Pink Floyd Black Sabbath and Led Zeppeling. But the list would be endless if I should tell you the bands I really like. For a long time I hear almost every style of music as I believe that by doing this I get more open and have more ideas when composing.
How was the Infinity Project (Speaking of Infinity and Darkmind)
From the beginning I knew I wanted to be an international band. And after the first ideas I began to call for artists that fit with the composition I was doing. Darkmind I think it is the highest point and explored of the Albums that I wrote, and also has excellent graphic’s quality. People often write to me saying that they like the Album really much.
Tell us a little about the band and around you.
Actually I compose the majority of the songs and lyrics in my studio. And then I think and deliver the material to the musician that I designate this or that part on the track. The musicians who accompany me are too professional. And that's why I chose them. And the band is made up of 5 Argentine and one Swedish, and I can happily say that I am completely satisfied with them. This together with the great team I have, does make me look to the future with great optimism.
Your new album will be released in 2010 and celebrated the tenth anniversary of the band. Tell the public of Arena Heavy,all the details you can tell.
It is a great challenge for me and all the team that accompanies me, face a double album because the way I work with so many people outside of Argentina as guests (they can be seen on the official site) is transformed into a real musical puzzle.
The secret is knowing how the pieces fit.
Another important step in this record is that all items are new and the marathon of national and international guest musicians, absolutely enriches the work. The content of this album, which will have about 23 or 24 tracks, will be very varied, as I usually do in my previous albums. I can assure you two things. In this case. There are many fast harmonies accompanied by many orchestras. And the dark halo is covered with a surprisingly Gothic and you will meet great female singers, but the incorporation of male singers will stand out very much, something that in my previous albums wasnt there.
I can also tell you that there are new discoveries like the Canadian singer named Mikki she has 14 years old, or the great world-renowned Argentine tenor Dario Schmunck ... Mik's another example as big surprise and will give much to talk about. And more surprise guests that we have not yet revealed. And if all this isnt enough, the first thousand units will be a limited edition numbered with poster and a Stiker gift. I think we're dealing with a very good double CD to celebrate the anniversary of Beto Vazquez Infinity.
Do you have any estimates of shows here in Brazil, and why shows did not happen here yet, even Brazil being so close?
At the moment we are committed to this great double album, and I can not even perform here in Buenos Aires. Unfortunately, my shows are a little expensive, of course would love to play in Brazil. And nothing would make me happier. Were incredibly so close,and yet I could not enjoy a show in your country.
What is your opinion about illegal downloading? What about the trend of bands get their album for free on the Web.
Illegal downloads, I think it is a double edged sword. If the person is conscious and after downloading, likes the music and then buy the Album for support the artist,then is excellent. If all download and nobody buys Albums, music will disapear. I think it's a matter of conscience. Music is an art, art is not cheap. If not what will do the artist for living?
Youre very connected to the net, you've got MySpace, lastfm, facebook. What is your opinion of them and of twitter. Here in Brazil many bands use that tool.
All media is for help spread, and is for be communicated with fans and musicians. In fact there was no net or such a services, this inerview would not be possible. I think it's a great way of bringing people together.
What tips you give to the Brazilian metal scene, to the point that it presents itself in most countries today?
Particularly in Brazil I think really there are excellent musicians and bands. In fact in my house I have records of Brazil as Heavenfalls, Dynasty, Angra, Sepultura, Seven Angels just to name a few. Which I think are excellent bands. I think that Brazil deserves a prominent place in the world of metal.
What you think about the Latin-American metal, and the vision of the rest of the world about it?
Unfortunately being in South America can not accomplish much. We are very committed to an low economy,and low infrastructure, and this makes things cost 4 times more than those living in Europe. And it's unfortunate because (as I said before) here we have very good bands and great musicians. In Europe they have more access to grow. Then all it is easier. Hopefully someday this will be change.
What are your expectations about the reception of the new album in America and Europe?
Based on Darkmind sales,I really hope will be well received by the public and the press. Darkmind is currently published in China and Taiwan by Rock Empire, BVM Records In Argentina, Brazil distribution by Hellion Records ,and Germany were distributed by Metal Roxx, and were talking to expand it to other countries. I'm really satisfied and really thankful to the people and the press, because it was very well received. And with this new double Album we hope grow even more than wiht Darkmind.
Talk about your stuff as bass-player.
This was the instrument that I love from the beggining, my biggest influence on the bass was Chris Squire (Yes) and Geddy Lee from Rush. But there are a losts of incredible musicians that make a delight of this instrument.

Hoy Arena Heavy esta haciendo su primera entrevista internacional. Estamos muy orgullosos de este privilegio de poder entrevistar a este hombre tan importante. El bajista, multiinstrumentista y compositor. Beto Vazquez. Que desde el año 2000 nos presenta con su proyecto llamado Infintiy. Muchas gracias Beto.
Me gustaría que hables un poco de tu entrenamiento, influencias. El origen de Beto Vazquez Infinity
Empecé tocando el bajo como músico autodidacta, y después de formar Beto Vazquez Infinity como banda que refleja la mixtura de muchos estilos musicales. Fui a estudiar música a la escuela de Florida y estudie armonía composición y teclados. Es ahí donde empecé a crecer realmente como músico. Actualmente estoy dedicado a la composición. Y estoy estudiando guitarra con un profesor. De esta manera, puedo interpretar o tocar, bajo teclado y guitarras. Mis influencias son desde muchos años a esta parte sigo sumando nuevas influencias pero el ABC mío, puede decirse que es. Pink Floyd Black Sabbath y Led Zeppeling. Pero seria infinita la lista si debería decirte las bandas que me gustan realmente. Desde hace mucho tiempo escucho casi todos los estilos de música que hay porque creo que haciendo esto me abro mucho más y tengo más ideas a la hora de componer.
Como fue el Proyecto Infinity (Hablando de Infinity y de Darkmind)
Desde un principio supe que quería ser una banda internacional. Y después de las primeras ideas empecé a convocar a artistas que encajaran con la composición que estaba haciendo. DARKMIND, creo que es el punto más alto y explorado de los discos que compuse, y acompaña también la excelente calidad grafica del disco. La gente me escribe a menudo diciendo que realmente el disco les gusto mucho.
Contanos un poco y acerca de la banda que te rodea.
En realidad usualmente compongo la mayoría de los temas y las letras en mi estudio. Y después pienso y entrego el material al músico que designe para tal o cual parte para que la ejecute en el track. Los músicos que me acompañan son excesivamente profesionales. Y por eso los elegí. Y la banda esta formada por 5 Argentinos y una Sueca, y felizmente puedo decir que estoy absolutamente conforme con ellos. Esto acompañado junto al gran equipo de trabajo que tengo, hace que mire al futuro con mucho optimismo.
Tu nuevo álbum será lanzado en 2010 y celebrara el décimo aniversario de la banda. Contale al publico de Arena Heavy, en principio sobre esto y todos los detalles que puedas contarnos.
Es un gran desafío para mí y para todo el equipo que me acompaña, encarar un álbum doble, ya que de la manera que trabajo y con tanta gente fuera de Argentina como invitados (que pueden ver en el sitio oficial) Se transforma en un verdadero rompecabezas musical. El secreto es saber encajar las piezas.
Otro paso importante en este disco es que todos los temas son nuevos y la maratón de músicos invitados internacionales y nacionales, enriquece absolutamente la obra. El contenido de este disco, que tendrá aproximadamente 23 o 24 tracks, será muy variado, como acostumbro a hacer en mis anteriores discos. Puedo asegurarte dos cosas. Que también van a sobresalir. En este caso. Hay muchos temas rápidos acompañados por muchas armonías sinfónicas. Y la parte oscura esta cubierta con un halo gótico y sorprendentemente vas a encontrarte con excelentes cantantes femeninas, pero la incorporación de cantantes masculinos se va a destacar y mucho, cosa que en mis discos anteriores no hay.
También puedo contarte que hay nuevos descubrimientos como la cantante canadiense de 14 años llamada Mikki, o el gran tenor Argentino reconocido mundialmente Dario SCHMUNCK... Y otro ejemplo Mik, de So Cold que es una gran sorpresa y va a dar mucho que hablar. Más invitados sorpresa que todavía no hemos develado. Y si a todo esto le sumas que las primeras mil unidades serán una edición limitada numerada con póster y stiker de regalo. Creo que tenemos entre manos un muy buen disco doble para festejar el aniversario de Beto Vazquez Infinity.
Tenes show’s planeados acá en Brasil? Y porque todavía no tocaron acá, estando tan cerca?
Por el momento estamos abocados a este gran disco doble, y ni siquiera puedo presentarme en Buenos Aires este año. Lamentablemente los shows míos son un poco costosos, por supuesto amaría tocar en brasil. Y nada me haría más feliz. Increíblemente estando tan cerca, aun no pude disfrutar de un show en tu país.
Cual es tu opinión acerca de las descargas ilegales? Que hay acerca de la tendencia de las bandas de sacar sus álbum gratis en la Web.
Las descargas ilegales, creo que son un arma de doble filo. Si la persona es conciente y después de bajarlo, le gusta el disco va y lo compra para a poyar al artista, me parece excelente. Si todos bajamos música y nadie compra discos, la música y los discos van a desaparecer. Creo que es una cuestión de conciencia. La música es un arte, el arte no se regala. Si no de que viven los artistas.?
Estas muy conectado a la net, tenes Myspace, lastfm, facebook. Cual es tu opinión acerca de estos medios y que pensas de twitter. Acá en Brasil muchas bandas usan esa herramienta.
Todos los medios de comunicación son para ayudar a difundir y a estar comunicados con los fans y los músicos. De hecho si no existiera este tipo de servicio, este reportaje no seria posible. Creo que es una muy buena forma de acercar a la gente.
Que consejos podrías darle a la escena metalera brasileña, sobre el punto de presentarse en más países.
Particularmente creo que realmente en Brasil hay excelentes músicos y bandas. De hecho en mi casa tengo discos de Brasil como: Heavenfalls, Dinasty, Angra, Sepultura, Seven Angels por nombrar algunos. Los cuales me parecen excelentísimas bandas. Creo que Brasil merecería un lugar bien destacado en el mundo del metal.
Que pensas de la escena metalera de Latin América. Y la visión del resto del mundo sobre nosotros.
Lamentablemente estando en Sudamérica no se pueden lograr muchas cosas. Estamos con una economía bastante comprometida, una baja infraestructura, y esto hace que las cosas nos cuesten 4 veces mas que a los que viven en Europa. Y es lamentable porque se (como te dije anteriormente) acá hay muy buenas bandas y excelentes músicos. En Europa tienen más acceso para crecer y mantenerse. Entonces todo les resulta más sencillo. Esperemos algún día esto se revierta.
Que expectativas tenes sobre como van a recibir tu nuevo Álbum, en América y Europa.
Basándome en las ventas de DARKMIND, realmente espero sea bien recibió por el publico y la prensa. Darkmind esta actualmente editado en China y Taiwán por Rock Empire, En Argentina por BVM RECORDS, en Brasil distribuido por Hellion Records, Y en Alemania distribuido por Metal Roxx, y estamos en conversaciones para expandirlo a otros países. Estoy realmente conforme y realmente agradecido a la gente y la prensa, porque fue muy bien recibido. Y con este nuevo disco doble espero que superemos a DARKMIND.
Contanos cosas de vos como bajista.
Este fue el instrumento que ame toda la vida por eso me dedique en principio a el, mi mayor influencia en el bajo fue CHRIS SQUIRE (YES) Y GEDDY LEE de RUSH. Pero también hay una legión de increíbles músicos que hacen un deleite de este instrumento.
