Beto Vazquez: to Infinity and beyond!
Hailing from Argentina, Beto Vazquez could have remained a perfect unknown artist, as his albums are rarely distributed outside his home country, where he gained recognition with the heavy metal act NEPAL . But he didn't, as he's into opera metal, like those including a lot of guests. And he had struck a great blow by welcoming Tarja Turunen on his first album, gaining interest among NIGHTWISH fans. Beto is releasing, this fall, his third (well, fourth, but that's a little more complicated than that..) album, called Darkmind and is meaning to make his way to the top of the international metal scene. Email interview by Thierry in September 2008.
1)The trailer for « Darkmind » has just been released and some tracks sound really heavy. Do you think you're getting heavier by the time?
Beto Vazquez Hello Thierry !: Band sound, is by far more wide, that´s why behind my name goes the word Infinity, because for me music is Infinity. My root´s are more heavy and shymphonic, I'm sure that Darkmind sounds more heavier than prior Albums, but when you heard the whole Album you will find out that in matter, in a compositive way it has a perfect balance between symphonic and heavy.
2) How do you choose your guest singers? Do you compose for them, or are the tracks already ready when you choose them, and then they have a adapt?
Actually in both ways, in the way that i use when an idea comes to my head, I make of it a song and then i think of who would fit better for sing, but when i know first who´s gonna sing i prepare the song on a basis of style and voice, for make the artist more comfortable.
3) You still haven't worked with anyone from France, any idea of a French artist you'd like to collaborate with?
I really i didn't have any caind of approach with a French Artist, many or my guest come to me by themselves and I personally call other´s, but to be honest i didn't had much contact with French´s yet, but for sure I´d love to have a French guest for my next Album, It will be an honour.
4) You're mainly known in France because Tarja Turunen took part in the first album. Is that something you don't care of, or would you like to change this?
Actually, Tarja is a personal friend of mine, if thank´s that is i become known, i can only thank her for her talent and fame. Question is ? How many people can have Tarja as a guest for an Album. Answer : Don't you think i got to be grateful for been the only one in South America that had her as a guest. Then how can it bother me. Answer is : It doesn´t and i wouldn't change it at all.
5) Flying towards the new Horizon remained unknown and undistributed in France, why is that?
Because i didn't had any kind of offer from a French Label, for make a release, simply because of that and for no other reason. In this moment I got my own label and I produce myself (BVM Records) So now is quiet simple to make negotiations in another way. By the way my contact emails are within my site.
6) What about this album that was never released? Can you tell more about the reasons why we can't listen to it?
Space Without Limits was done back in 2003, but for exclusive problems of that company, it wasn't released, but I still got hopes and doors aren't completely closed.
7) Is there any chance we'll get to see the project in concert, like Avantasia did?
I´d love to, it will be a huge honour be able to move my live project to France, exactly like I played in Spain in 2002, if conditions where the same, it will be a pleasure.

8) Do you consider yourself as « The Argentinian Arjen Anthony Lucassen »?
I do admire a lot Arjen´s work, many times i hear this question, because the way of work of course is similar, i think people does consider it that way. Anyway for me is an honour such a compliment
9) Who are your main influences?
When i was a kid, i listen to classic music , specially Bach, i grow up within symphonic, and bands like King Crimson, Yes, o Pink Floyd, later on, i fall for heavy and all the extensions, and then i discovered my favorite bands of the genre , like Black Sabbath, i love as well, bands like Led Zeppelin, and all kinds from 70´s and 80´s, it will be way to long to name them all, here i name some more now days band´s : Paradise Lost, Sentenced,Within Temptation o Opeth.
10) We have the habit to ask for the interviewee's album top 5, could you give us yours?

Beto Vàzquez Salut Thierry! Le son du groupe est de loin plus élargi, c'est pourquoi derrière mon nom j'ai accolé celui d'Infinity. Mes racines sont plus heavy et symphoniques. Je suis sûr que Darkmind sonne plus heavy que mes albums précédents, mais quand tu auras écouté l'album dans sa totalité, tu découvriras qu'en fait, d'un point de vue composition, il est parfaitement équilibré, entre le symphonique et le heavy.
2) Comment choisis-tu tes invités? Est-ce que tu composes pour eux, ou est-ce que les morceaux sont déjà prêts quand tu les choisis, et que dans ce cas ils doivent s'adapter?
A vrai dire ça marche dans les deux sens. Quand une idée me vient à l'esprit, j'en fais une chanson puis je choisis qui serait le plus adapté pour la chanter. Mais quand je sais d'abord qui va chanter, alors je prépare la chanson sur une certaine base de style et de voix, afin que l'artiste soit plus à l'aise.
3) Tu n'as encore jamais travaillé avec un guest français, aurais-tu une idée d'un artiste français avec qui tu aimerais collaborer?
Je n'ai jamais eu aucune approche avec un artiste français. La plupart de mes invités viennent à moi d'eux-mêmes, quant aux autres, je les appelle personnellement, mais pour être honnête, je n'ai jamais vraiment eu de contact avec des Français, pas encore. Mais pour sûr j'adorerais avoir un guest français sur mon prochain album, ça serait un honneur.
4) Tu es principalement connu en France parce que Tarja Turunen a pris part au premier album. Est-ce que tu t'en moques ou aimerais-tu changer cela?
A vrai dire, Tarja est une amie à moi, si c'est grâce à elle que je me fais connaître, je ne peux que la remercier pour son talent et sa célébrité. La question est: combien de gens ont pu avoir Tarja comme guest sur un album? Et la réponse: ne penses-tu pas que je suis reconnaissant pour être le seul Sud-Américain qui a pu l'avoir comme guest? Dans ce cas, comment ça pourrait m'ennuyer? Ca ne m'ennuie pas, et je ne voudrais pas du tout changer cela.
5) "Flying Towards the New Horizon" est passé inaperçu et non distribué en France, comment ça se fait?
Parce que je n'ai jamais reçu aucune offre venant d'un label français pour la sortie, uniquement pour ça, et pour aucune autre raison. En ce moment, j'ai mon propre label et je m'autoproduis. (BVM Records) Du coup, maintenant, c'est assez simple de négocier ce genre d'arrangements. Au fait, mes mails de contact sont sur mon site.
6) Qu'en est-il de cet album qui n'est jamais sorti? Peux-tu nous en dire plus sur les raisons pour lesquelles nous ne pouvons l'écouter?
"Space Without Limits" a été enregistré en 2003, mais à cause de problèmes d'exclusivité à mon ancien label (NEMS Enterprises, NdT), il n'a jamais été sorti. Mais j'espère toujours que les portes ne sont pas complètement fermées.
7) Y'a-t-il une chance de voir ce projet sur scène, comme pour Avantasia?
J'adorerais, ça serait un énorme honneur de pouvoir amener mon projet live en France, exactement comme j'ai pu le faire en Espagne en 2002. Si les conditions étaient les mêmes, ça serait un plaisir.

8) Te considères-tu comme le "Arjen Anthony Lucassen argentin"?
J'admire beaucoup le travail d'Arjen et ce n'est pas la première fois que j'entends cette question, car évidemment que la manière de travailler est la même, ça fait qu'on peut me considérer de cette manière. En tout cas, c'est un honneur pour moi de lire un tel compliment.
9) Qui sont tes influences principales?
Quand j'étais gosse, j'écoutais de la musique classique, surtout Bach. J'ai grandi avec des symphonies, et des groupes comme King Crimson, Yes ou Pink Floyd. Plus tard je suis tombé amoureux du heavy et toutes ses ramifications, puis j'ai découvert mes groupes favoris du genre, comme Black Sabbath. J'aime beaucoup aussi des groupes comme Led Zeppelin, et de tous styles venant des années 70 ou 80. Ca serait vraiment trop long de tous les nommer. Ajoutons quelques groupes actuels: Paradise Lost, Sentenced, Within Temptation ou Opeth.
10) Quel serait ton top 5 albums du moment?

C'est quasiment impossible pour moi de n'en donner que 5, il y en a tant que je dois laisser de côté...
